THE CITY OF BELGRADE Good to know Belgrade is the City of Culture, Inspiration, Sports and Festivals, Serbian capital develops and changes fast, protecting its rich and diverse history within the mixture of culture, architecture and urban spirit. With some of the most attractive locations, Belgrade Fortress – the oldest cultural and historical monument, Skadarlija – the bohemian quarter in the city centre, Knez Mihailova Street ; Old and New Royal Court, Federal Parliament, Temple of St. Sava, Zemun and many others, Belgrade makes the cultural centre of South East Europe. Gastronomy Serbian cuisine is a mix of traditional, Mediterra- nean, Hungarian, Turkish and Austrian, accompa- nied by a large diversity of beverages. With over 3.000 restaurants, bars, cafes, clubs and “kafanas” Belgrade offers good value for money with a diverse cousin which includes international and traditional national dishes. Probably the best place to try out the local cuisine is Skadarlija – the bohemian quarter. Must taste Burek Burek is the king of break- fasts in Serbia. This pie made of layers of thin dough is usually made with meat, cheese or greens, although the empty burek (just dou- gh, no filling) option is also popular. It is usually eaten with yoghurt, and although some bakeries sell it by the gram, the common way to buy it is by quarters of baking tray (about 250 gr). Rakija (brandy) Rakija is the inevitable inha- bitant on a Serbian table. This strong drink can be made from almost any fruit, the most popular being plum, quince, pear, apricot, grapes ... Brandy is drunk as an aperitif with cold appetizer, as a digestive, for warm welcome, for easier parting, with a song, but also to alleviate the sorrow. Urban Lifestyle Savamala is the new epicenter of urban culture, entertain- ment and lifestyle in Belgrade, with trendy restaurants, clubs, bars, galleries and a cultural center. Some known sites are: Monsun Monsun is a huge club located in the ex-industrial hall, now being capable of holding 700 people. You will certainly not head to this club for a morning coffee, but this is a club you will stay until morning coffee dancing to electro, house mu- sic, Drum’n’Bass, dubstep… Mikser House Mikser House, designed by creative transformation of the oldwarehouse, is a cultural ins- titution that connects cultural, educational as well as commer- cial activities in themultifunc- tional space. Gigs, exhibitions, theatre plays, workshops and conferences take place in Mikser House, but the space is also used as a bar-restaurant. KC Grad Cultural center Grad is hou- sed in a building dating back to 1884. Once a devastated place, it has become a loca- tion for exhibitions, concerts, debates, plays, conferences and workshops. It offers an abundance of various programs usually promoting young artists, and at the same time it is a cozy place for a coffee or beer with one of the prettiest small gardens in Belgrade.
